We are celebrating "Dia de los Muertos" this year with a Latin American inspired folk art show and dance. The art show opens at 1:00 PM. At 7:30 PM the dynamic rock and roll band, Blue Lightning takes the stage -- and the high energy musical cavorting with the ancestral spirits continues until 11:00 PM.

Dia de los Muertos is an important holiday in Central and Southern Mexico. It is a time for remembering and honoring deceased relatives. From midnight on October 31st through November 2nd. It is believed that the gates of heaven are opened and the ancestral spirits are allowed to reunite with their families.

"Who Does She Think She Is?" is a documentary following the lives of five women artists and the challenges they face juggling their overwhelming drive to create along with all the other aspects of their lives - children, money, relationships, and time. The have opted to have it all - not to choose between career and children, responsibility and self-fulfillment. A presentation and discussion with two local women artists, who have also refused to choose, will follow the film. Art by many local Rogue Valley women artists will be exhibited at this location through September 29th, 2010.

Cathy Dorris is a mixed media artist who has a passion for using a wide variety of mediums and materials, including raw elements from the earth and recycled objects. Her mission is to create art events which go beyond the visual, and which invite viewers to engage all their senses in the experience of art. Traveling extensively, she has been inspired to create, teach -- and now present to Southern Oregon -- multimedia art experiences representative of many regions from around the globe.

For 25 years, Cathy has been teaching in schools, art as therapy, holding workshops in mixed media painting, Japanese sumi-e, collage, sculpture, assemblage, and fiber arts, out of her studio/gallery in Southern Oregon. Her work has been published in magazines and newspapers, and shown in galleries in Seattle, Portland, and Southern Oregon.

See what a world without boundaries looks like!

May, a month of new beginnings, of life springing into motion. This exhibit aims to bring the worlds of disabled and non-disabled artists together, remove labels, limitations and boundaries, and showcase only ABILITY.

Can you tell from their works which of these artists have achieved national acclaim? Who has won awards in recognition of artistic excellence? Or which of these artists struggle with disabilities? Does it matter?

Everyone viewing this "side by side" show is given the opportunity to weave in and out of both worlds, and hopefully conclude that they are really one.

Please come experience and celebrate the artists' ability, and meet all these exceptional people who have recognized that art is the common thread which binds them together.

About the Organizers:

Tess Ryneal was challenged to find a senior project at Ashland High School, and decided it was time to bring "the outside in". Passionate about advocating for the disabled and integrating them into our community, Tess chose to use art as her vehicle. As John F. Kennedy said, "Art is the great democrat, calling forth creative genius from every sector of society, disregarding race or religion or wealth or color." And, one might add, it disregards physical ability.

Living Opportunities, the sponsor of Studio Sfumato (sfoo-MA-toe), has been creating new life experiences for individuals with developmental disabilities since 1974. The ability to live in the same neighborhoods, work for the same employers, and to have the same opportunities that all people enjoy and aspire to in the community.

"SHINING LIGHT ON THE DARK: The Gifts of the Dark Night of the Soul", a fall art event series this September, October and November 2009.

During the months of September, October and November 2009, Betsy Lewis Art Event Productions is assembling Rogue Valley visual artists, poets and experts in the field to take part in a fall series of art events exploring the "Dark Night of the Soul" and its role in healing and transforming human lives.

"The Dark Night of the Soul" was coined by the 16th-century Christian mystic, St. John of the Cross, who used it to describe spiritual crises. Now it has come to describe psychological ones as well which - once live through - can lead to better health and well-being.

A fine art show "The Gifts of the Dark Night" will kick off the art series at Talent Art Gallery located at 108 S. Market St. in Talent, Oregon, October 1 through October 31, 2009; the opening reception will be held October 3 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Among the contributing artists will be Ron Hadath, Jim Thompson, Janet London and Betsy Lewis. Marla Estes, M.A. Transpersonal Studies, will present a lecture followed by a question and answer period entitled, "Embracing the Dark Night of the Soul" at Talent Art Gallery, October 3 at 6:30 p.m., as part of the opening of the fine art show, and on October 9, a poetry reading presented by the Rogue Valley Chapter of the Oregon State Poetry Associaton will be held at Talent Art Gallery from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. "Movies That Move You", a film presentation and discussion exploring being stranded on a desert island as a metaphor for the Dark Night will be facilitated by Marla Estes M.A, and will take place at Rogue Valley Metaphysical Library in Ashland, 258 A. Street, UPSTAIRS, Suite 7, on October 7th, 2009, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Using art, writing and supportive sharing to explore and heal, Janet London, M. Ed.and Betsy Lewis will offer a day long workshop entitled "Healing in a Starry Starry Night" on November 7th, 2009 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at The Unitarian Universalist Center, 87 4th St. Ashland Oregon.

Marla Estes is an Ashland writer, teacher, mentor and workshop facilitator. Her focus is psychological, especially through a Jungian lens, looking at topics such as women's themes, gender relations, shadow, emotions, relationships of all kinds, individuation and inner work. Janet London has an M.Ed. in counseling from Antioch University. She taught human development and psychology classes in community colleges and has counseled for more than 20 years.
